Such ornately carved oak cabinets, sometimes called buffet-armoires, are emblematic of Belgian Namurois production throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

The present piece is particularly unusual for the geometric paneling of the doors, and eclecticism of the decor, which suggests dating to a later phase circa 1875. The inner cabinetry interestingly mirrors the exterior of the piece, from shelves which follow the angles of the exterior cornice, to small drawers which reflect the interior paneling.

‍The sculpted laurel chute topped with a Louis XVI style ribbon between the lower doors swings to reveal the keyhole.
