A very rare and iconic work of early furniture, this oak chest belongs to a family of coffers made in Northern France or the Low Countries during the final quarter of the 15th century.

As usual and consistent with age, the base was remade at a later date, although the original lid and much of the original lock remains. This example exhibits the most desirable qualities of this rarified genre, with panels of carved tracery covered by ogival arches in high relief, punctuated by applied gothic pilasters topped with pinnacles. The slightly clumsiness of the center panel representing the Holy Family is typical of these special chests.
